Top Ten Books I Had to Buy...But Still Haven't Read

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is Top Ten Tuesday Rewind. Since my blog is relatively new, I get my pick of the past 44 topics. Since I can't ever manage to pass up a great book bargain, my choice this week is:

Top Ten Books I Just HAD To Buy...But Are Still Sitting on My Bookshelf

1. Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky

2. The Privileges by Jonathan Dee

3. Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

4. Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese

5. The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

6. Time and Again by Jack Finney

7. Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore

8. Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín

9. In the Woods by Tana French

10. The Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst

Many of these books are by authors who I have read and loved, so I don't fear disappointment. There aren't really any good reasons why these are still sitting on my shelf. I guess a lot of my reading is based on my mood and current whims. One of my goals this year is to put a significant dent in my TBR pile, so maybe this can serve as my starting checklist. Have you read any of these titles? Let me know what you thought!

  1. I pre-ordered A Gate at the Stairs for my kindle so long ago - before I moved to Macedonia. I cannot believe I still haven't read it, seems like the longer I let it go the more I avoid it. And I LIKE Lorrie Moore!

  2. I haven't read any of those, though I do own Shadow of the Wind. I'm also supposed to read Cutting for Stone for a book club in a couple months. Brothers K is also on the TBR list.

I browsed through your blog and I really like the variety in your posts. I'm a new follower. :)

Hope you stop by and check out my blog!

  3. Ellen - Avoidance...that's how I feel about books that keep sitting on my shelves. I read Moore's short story collection Birds of America and loved it, so I figured I'd give her novel a shot. I'm pretty sure I'd love it too, but I just keep passing it over for some reason. The great mystery that is the TBR pile.

  10. Yes, this was a topic I was going to tackle today too - I've got so many waiting on my TBR shelf and just not enough hours in the day. So frustrating. Good luck! You've got some great titles here, especially #1,3 & 5.

  14. Haha, I have a few of these on my list too! Shadow of the Wind is sort of intense/complex but it's good!! I also want to read The Devil in the White City... apparently they're making a movie out of it!

  15. I remember when this was the weekly list. I don't think I visited a single blog that didn't have a book on the list that wasn't also sitting on my shelf unread. I have quite a few of these.

    Here is my list

  16. Shadow of the Wind is amazing - definitely give it a try! Not sure which edition you have, but the one I bought came with a soundtrack of classical music composed by Zafon to fit with the story. It was fun to read the book with the music playing in the background.

Just found your blog - it's great!

  17. Rayna - Thanks for stopping by and leaving your thoughts! I think having a cd composed by the author is fabulous! That would definitely add a new dimension to the reading. Looks like I need to tackle Shadow of the Wind soon.

  18. Devil in the White City is a great book -- very creepy, but also a fast and interesting read. I'd highly recommend it.
