(Not So) Thrifty Book Finds

Today is my first full day back home after my trip to NYC. I finished 3 books over the trip that need to be reviewed, so that's what I'll be working on today. In the meantime, I thought I'd share with you some of my not so thrifty book finds for the last month and a half. The first batch came from the Borders near me that is closing soon, and the other batch is from Strand Book Store near Union Square. The mug in the second photo was an impulse buy, but I just couldn't pass up such a cute design! Also, Eating Animals and 31 Bond Street are both upcoming reads for my book club, so I justify those by saying I'm planning ahead.

While all these books were half-off the list price, they are still more than my usual $1-3 finds. However, it's nice to get to read some newer books that I've had my eye on recently.

Have you read any of these? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  1. Oh yay! I hope you like A Visit From The Goon Squad and The Bird Sisters! I haven't read the others; great finds! I remember hearing about the book lonely last year sometime- I look forward to seeing if you think it's worth checking out. The Strand is one of the places I miss most in New York.

  2. Man, you've got quite the stacks there. I am so jealous! Of the trip and the books :) I have to get The Bird Sisters soon...I keep saying that but seriously I'm going to do it soon. Which Borders is going out of business near you?

Also, I CANNOT wait for our group meeting. So many good books in the coming months & so many new members. Awesome. I'll be planning a tea party as soon as J and I get moved into the new place.

Glad you had fun on your trip-- you deserved it!

  3. I read Eating Animals, and it's one of those books that's REALLY hard to read without changing the way you live. After I read it I went completely vegetarian for a few months before finding out I was pregnant and that had to take a back seat. Anyway, be prepared!

  6. I love that mug - I might need to swing by The Strand and pick one up!

My bookclub is also going to be reading Goon Squad so I need to pick up a copy.

  7. I would have succumbed to the mug, too! Of all of those books I only read Goon Squad, which I thought was more interesting than great, but still a worthwhile read.

  8. zeteticat - I'm hoping Lonely turns out as good as it sounds. It's a book that I haven't read many reviews of, so it could go either way. Strand really is a great part of NYC. They changed the layout of the basement, and parts of the others floors since the last time I went, making it feel much more open and clean.

Beth - Believe me when I say this was such a tough purchase to make. I haven't spent this much on books in ages! You should definitely get The Bird Sisters soon. We could do a read-a-long & have a fun mini-discussion about it! And I'm so excited about the upcoming books and new members too! I just hope with the growing size we don't lose the intimacy that made the group so great at the beginning.

Kathleen - Thanks for the heads up! When Eating Animals was chosen for the group, I didn't even know what it was about...I thought it was fiction. Now I'm really curious to see what effect it has on me.

Amused - I'm really excited about The Peach Keeper. I'm relatively new to Allen's work, but have enjoyed some of her other light, charming reads.

Brenna - I'm actually a little afraid of reading Eating Animals...I just don't know how it's going to make me feel overall, and I'm not so sure I would be reading it if it weren't a book club pick (although, I guess getting you to read outside your comfort zone is part of what those groups are about)

Booksnyc - You should definitely pick one up! What literature enthusiast could pass up such adorably bookish owls? Not me!

As the Crowe Flies and Reads - My biggest fear with Goon Squad is that it won't live up to all the awards/hype. I always try my best to go in with reasonable expectations, but it's really hard in some cases.
